Our approach

The art comes first

Our creative guidance, grant support and mentorship are always free, before and after publication. You do not need to join the Workshop or publish with Northern INK to ask for help. We offer support within our capacity, with no obligation to become a publishing client. Our job is to help you develop your work and find support to create it, without turning every conversation into a sale.

If we agree to publish your book, Northern INK will not charge you before publication. We agree on clear publishing terms in advance, with the larger share going to the author. We want to grow by helping more writers finish their work, reach readers and come back with their next book.

The $5 poetry-contest entry fee is separate. Optional author copies are quoted at our printing and shipping costs. Contest fees, prizes and contributor benefits →

Free Creative Consultations

Tell us what you’re creating and where you could use a hand. Choose the topics that fit and share a few sentences about your project, whether it’s a grant application, a manuscript or something else.

These conversations are free and open to Workshop members and non-members alike. Our editor will review your request and reply by email when available to discuss the next step.
